Gas Detection

Almost two-thirds of managers not confident in gas detection provision

Automated calibration is possible using units such as the Galaxy GX2

New research shows that 62 per cent of mangers are not
confident that their gas detection equipment is tested often enough.

New findings from research commissioned by Analytical
Technology (ATI) has found that the majority of managers in
the UK are concerned that their gas detection equipment is
not tested often enough.

The study showed that just 32 per cent of managers are very confident that the gas detectors in their workplace actually work, with 62 per cent of respondents claiming that the equipment is not tested as regularly as they would like.

However, the white paper also showed that a quarter of managers would continue to work as normal even if the gas detectors in their plant failed.

This might worry the 80 per cent of workers who intimated that they are concerned or extremely concerned about the risks that gas poses in the workplace.

With some gases being colourless and odourless, it is impossible to tell if you are being exposed to harmful fumes without gas detection equipment and employees in most lines of business could be at risk without such facilities in place.

Approximately nine out of ten managers recognise the importance of gas detection equipment in the workplace, which could be comforting to those concerned about their safety.

There are numerous dangerous gases in use in British workplaces and mangers should be aware of the risks posed to their staff and educate employees to recognise the danger signs and know how their gas detection equipment works.

One example is chlorine gas, which is highly toxic and can cause serious irritation to the respiratory system. It can be recognised by its bleach-like smell and its greenish yellow appearance.

This is just one type of gas that can pose a danger in the workplace and only proper gas detection equipment can be help spot potentially fatal fumes before they become a major issue. When gas detection equipment is being serviced, Frontline safety can offer replaceable instruments, available for hire to allow continued protection and peace of mind.

The ATI white paper was released in the same week that the Southern Daily Echo reported that experts in body protection equipment were called to a Southampton industrial site when four workers were taken ill after breathing in fumes.
