Drug Detection

UFC fighters come up clean in drug tests

Drug testing of the combatants at UFC 156 has shown all 22 fighters to be free of performance enhancing drugs.

The use of drug testing equipment is becoming more widespread and now extends to everything from elite sport to heavy industry.

Drug detection is essential in a number of trades due to the requirement to ensure workers are not putting themselves or others in danger.

However, in the sporting world, the main focus is on eliminating the use of performance enhancing substances, helping to create a level playing field for honest athletes.

One example is the testing of the competitors at the recent Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) event UFC 156.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission reportedly tested all 22 combatants for the use of both performance enhancing drugs - such as anabolic steroids - and recreational drugs such as cocaine.

Happily, all tests came back clean, meaning fans could watch the event knowing the results were not altered by banned substances.

However, the mixed martial arts (MMA) world has not always been without its controversies in terms of drug use and abuse.

Back at UFC 73 Sean Sherk battled it out with Hermes Franca for the Lightweight title, only for both fighters to subsequently fail their drug tests.

Meanwhile, Josh Barnett has failed three separate drug detection tests during his MMA career and is widely considered one of the reasons UFC tests for performance enhancing drugs.
