Hydrazine - Gas Profile

Hydrazine (H₂NNH₂) is a colourless gas that is very flammable and has a strong odour that is pungent, similar to ammonia. It is a part of the hydronitrogen group of gases and is commonly used as a powerful reducing agent as it is a very corrosive substance.

Hydrazine can be found within water boilers and heating systems as an antioxidant and corrosion inhibitor. It is also used in the pharmaceutical industry and is within fuel products. It is dangerous when mixed with air as it forms an explosive mixture. It is proven harmful to humans and aquatic life and has a detrimental effect on the environment. Hydrazine emits toxic fumes of ammonia, nitrogen oxides and hydrogen when it is decomposed. It is very dangerous as it reacts violently to metals, causing fire and can explode when exposed to heat or flame.

Humans commonly come into contact with Hydrazine through inhalation or skin absorption, which irritates the nose, throat and eyes, causing an allergic-reaction-type effect. Instant symptoms of exposure include headaches, dizziness and nausea, which can lead to seizures, kidney damage and even a coma. However, if Hydrazine is swallowed or inhaled, it can be instantly fatal to life.
